Directors Lab

Spring 2013

This tailor-made lab is an artist-in-residence programme designed to support directors and writer/directors strenghten skills needed to direct their full-length feature.

(Writer/)directors are offered a three month stay in a Binger Residency, during which they are coached and can select a project-specific trajectory from the A La Carte menu.

Participants will experiment with style and approach, investigating personal voice and developing a collaborative work process with key creative partners and professional actors.

Profile applicants

Directors are expected to have previous experience. In addition to feature films, this may include directing drama, TV series, advertising and short films. *Consideration will also be given to directors from a documentary background, however work must show evidence of a sense of narrative and an aesthetic sensibility that could translate into dramatic mise-en-scène.

Applicants will be assessed on video material submitted as part of their application. This material should demonstrate strong directing ability including: a sense of story and dramatic conflict/tension, an ability to work with actors and deliver good performances, and a good sense of how to visualise/realise drama. Applicants should also demonstrate a desire to make films accessible to a cinema audience.

Projects should be well-developed (ideally full-draft screenplays), coherent, and of a standard which enables the director to usefully explore material in workshop situations.
